The 5th film in the James Bond series and the fifth to star Sean Connery as M16 agent James Bond.  The film's screenplay was written by Roald Dahl, and lightly based on Ian Fleming's 1964 novel of the same name.  In the film, Bond is dispatched to Japan after American and Russian spacecraft disappear mysteriously in orbit.  With one side blaming the other, and an American moonshot just a few days away, Bond goes undercover on a remote Japanese island with local agent Kissy Suzuki, to find the perpetrators, bringing him face to face with Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the head of the SPECTRE.  This film reveals the features of Blofeld, who was previously a partially-unseen character.

***Movie Matinee at the Historic Masonic Theatre*** You Only Live Twice is an iconic representation of the collective memory of what Bond films represented to that first generation 007 fan. Mike Myers certainly conveyed that with his Austin Powers films, which, while serving as a take-off of the ‘60s spy genre in general, certainly takes much of its inspiration from YOLT (Bond fans love their acronyms). Friday the 13th: A Something Wicked Movie Event Friday, October 13 at 8pm In the John E. Hillert Auditorium The twisted minds behind our very own Something Wicked haunted house are at it again! Time to get primed for Halloween with this horror classic. Come in costume, prizes will be awarded…and enjoy a splattering good time. One of the longest-running horror film series began with this gory shocker from director Sean S. Cunningham. Entrepreneur Steve Christie (Peter Brouwer) re-opens Camp Crystal Lake after many years during which it has been cursed by murders and bad luck. The young and nubile counselors all begin to die extremely bloody deaths at the hands of an unseen killer during a rainstorm which isolates the camp. A young Kevin Bacon makes an appearance and is dispatched from under the bed on which he’s resting. Cunningham's tense direction, and some remarkable special-effects by acclaimed makeup artist Tom Savini are enough to make the horror trip back in time worthwhile. Friday the 13th made nearly 40 million dollars at the box office and spawned numerous sequels. Goodwill donations accepted

Enjoy a unique evening that celebrates the music of the landmark ‘Circle’ album, instigated in 1971 by John McEuen, founding member of the Grammy Award Winning group, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It tells the story of how the Carter family’s music became a classic American music form. Throughout the show you’ll hear tales of Mother Maybelle Carter, and how they converged for the historic sessions with Earl Scruggs, Vassar Clements, Roy Acuff, Doc Watson, Bashful Brother Oswald, Merle Travis, and Jimmy Martin. John McEuen starts the multi-media show with the story of that magic week in August 1971 when a group of young 1960’s west-coast hippies came to join the icons of Country Music in the studio. What resulted was the creation of the classic multi-platinum album – Will the Circle Be Unbroken. Songs from the band’s influential past accompany what is on screen as the show progresses to in-studio shots from early Nitty Gritty Dirt Band history to the ‘Circle’ album under way.

After years of honing his abilities by busking in NYC, on the road, and after two powerful shows in the Masonic Theatre and Amphitheatre, Phillip Roebuck (who was known for his raucous one-man band setup and lightning fast playing) has recently found musical success by teaming up with his wife Phoenix on upright bass.  Wielding a resonator guitar and two-piece stomping board, with Phoenix adding backing vocals and low end, Phillip's songwriting truly shines!  ROEBUCK's music is full of swamp blues, jump blues, hollers & stomps, shanties, ballads & breakdowns, and (of course) tear-jerkers. ROEBUCK: The Band brings with them special guest Sean K. Preston, who's music draws heavily on the influences of the classic, heartbroken sounds of Country & Western music from the 40s through the 70s . . . the honesty of the Blues by the likes of Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker . . . the bombast of 50s Rock 'n' Roll . . . the lyrical sophistication of musical poets like Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Nick Cave . . . the raw energy of Punk . . . and the spirituality of Mountain Gospel.  Sean's own songs range from delicate laments and lullabies to fiery sermons and confessions.

Several years in the making, Last Illusion was formed with one sole purpose . . . to become the premier musical tribute to The Trans-Siberian Orchestra, whose founder, Paul O'Neill, died in April of this year.  O'Neill explained the influences that led to his vision for Trans-Siberian Orchestra in an interview with The Morning Call last year.  "[Effects-heavy concert production] was always part of the vision for Trans-Siberian Orchestra, [and] the mixing of classical with rock, which I obviously got from bands like Emerson, Lake and Palmer," he said.  "The rock-opera aspect, which I love because it gives a third dimension, which I plagiarized from The Who."  Last Illusion channels O'Neill's original vision, and the result is a remarkable production that leaves audiences amazed.  The magic of Christmas, the magic of TSO . . . the magic of Last Illusion.  Experience the magic for yourself.

The ballet, set to the timeless Tchaikovsky score, was first performed in 1892 by the Mariinsky Theatre, home to the Krov Ballet.    Missy Belcher Floyd, Director, will continue to INVITE participants of all ages and levels of experience from local dance studios to perform in this production, as well!  Experience the magic that is "The Nutcracker" with the Shenandoah Ballet this December!

Get ready for a rockin' Christmas season treat!  From Virginia Beach, The Original Rhondels are a music tradition who have performed their hit recordings in almost every major city in the United States.  In 1969, Bill Deal and The Rhondels began a recording career that would take them to Madison Square Garden and across the country.  With three Top-10 hits ("May I", "I've Been Hurt", and "What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am?") the band hit the road, entertaining audiences with outstanding vocals, powerful brass, and exciting showmanship.  These hits also topped the charts in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, and Germany. The unexpected passing of Bill Deal in December 2003 was a great loss to the music industry; however, The Original Rhondels continue to perform the great music that earned them a star on the Legends Walk of Fame.  Performing from Orlando and Tampa FL to Charleston and Myrtle Beach, SC; from Montgomery AL to Washington DC; The Original Rhondels continue to delight their audiences around the country.

Hailing from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, The Steel Wheels are familiar with the traditions of folk music and how a string band is supposed to sound. In fact, they’ve been drawing on those steadfast traditions for more than a decade; yet, their name also evokes a sense of forward motion, which is clearly reflected in their latest album, Wild As We Came Here. Wild As We Came Here is a significant leap for the band, which started its journey in 2004. Wagler, Dickel, and Brubaker studied at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, about an hour from Charlottesville. (All four members of the band grew up in Mennonite families.) Wagler and Dickel were in a punk/alternative band until acoustic music lured them in. The Steel Wheels’ style weaves through Americana and Bluegrass music, Folk and Old-Time music, and the Acoustic Poetry of the finest singer-songwriters.

    Friday, March 2, 2018
    Show details

    Locality:
    Alleghany
    510 Main Street
    Clifton Forge, VA 24422

Barter Theatre makes its first appearance on our renovated stage, bringing this twisted comedy that takes a serious subject and gives it a hilarious biting edge. Set in the not-so-distant future, nursing home residents are housed in a government-run, repurposed penitentiary (because the prisons have been outsourced to China, naturally!) and the Head Nurse is being a real pill. Suffice it to say that resident morale is a little down. All is doom and gloom until Joe Taylor a new resident and former actor arrives. Fresh new life is about to be breathed into Nursing Home #273 whether Nurse Claudia and her orderlies approve or not! With each repressive rule and outrageous cost saving measure imposed by Nurse Claudia, and with Joe's help, these feisty boomers plot a coup d'état to show everyone that they aren't ready to give up on life just yet! "A Facility for Living" pulls out all the stops when it comes to addressing all the vices, follies, abuses and shortcomings of the "system"-in this case government's response to the issue of aging in America. Sometimes it's funny because it's just so wrong," says Richard Rose, Barter Theatre’s Artistic Director.  Because of the language and content, viewer discretion is advised.  Tickets: Main Orch: $25; Rear Orch/Front Balc: $20; Rear Balc: $15; Boxes: $35

Get your St. Patty’s Day groove on with us! Love Canon doesn't cover the music of the '80s as much as kidnap it and take it on a bluegrass-tinged joyride. It's a general rule of American culture that it takes 20-40 years for a decade to shed its stale stench and get its groove back. There's no shortage of clever musical re-enactors giving the first generation of MTV an ironic makeover: a fool's errand, given that the music already was soaked in postmodern irony. By contrast, Love Canon refreshes and extends the originals with affectionate humor and effortless virtuosity. The players -- including Old School Freight Train's Jesse Harper and Darrell Muller, Virginia Commonwealth University guitar and banjo master Adam Larrabee, Mandolin Virtuoso Andy Thacker, and dobro Jedi Jay Starling — add layers of depth to the still-appealing pop hooks.

Denise Glass of Lee County, VA has always had a passion for classic country music, particularly the music of Patsy Cline.  When asked how her love for Patsy Cline began, Glass says, "It started as a small girl when I would sing Patsy songs in my Dad's band.  I can't even remember when I first started loving Patsy's music.  I just always did." The inspiration to do a show paying tribute to Patsy Cline came when Denise first visited Patsy's home and final resting place in Winchester, VA.  "Going to Winchester was something I had wanted to do for a long time.  I was so emotional when I went to Patsy's grave, I went to my knees and sobbed like a baby.  Going to Patsy's home was very humbling.  Her family was very poor and simple.  I cried all through that house tour. People probably throught I was crazy . . . but that's how much I love Patsy Cline.  She is the whole reason I ever became a country music singer."

When the Quebe Sisters from Texas take a stage, and the triple-threat fiddle champions start playing and singing in multi-part close harmony, audiences are usually transfixed, then blown away! It's partly because the trio's vocal and instrumental performances are authentic all-Americana, all the time, respectful of the artists that inspired them the most. And whether the Quebes (rhymes with "maybe") are decked out in denims and boots or fashionably dressed to the nines in makeup, skirts and heels, the fresh-faced, clean-cut sisters, all in their 20s, look as good as they sound. Not surprisingly, the Quebe Sisters win standing ovations at just about every show. It's been that way since 2000, when they started fiddling together as pre-teens. The sisters' past is as colorful and eventful as their future is bright. Growing up in Burleson, TX, a southern suburb of Fort Worth, Hulda, Sophia and Grace were 7, 10 and 12 in 1998 when they attended their first local fiddle competition in nearby Denton, and decided fiddling was what they wanted to do. The girls earned solo and group accolades early on, winning state and national championships in their respective age groups in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002.

The Jackson River Scenic Trail Marathon is held on one of the most scenic trails in the country.  The Jackson River Scenic Trail follows its namesake river, winding its way between Intervale, just north of Covington, to Smith Bridge Trail Head following an old railroad bed of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (Hot Springs Branch) and passes through small communities, cultivated fields, and small patches of woodland along the way. It's common to see wildlife from the trail (birds, turtles, raccoons, rabbits, ground hogs, and deer).  Our course is on the smooth crushed gravel surface of The Jackson River Scenic Trail. The trail is mostly flat with some light hills. All finishers will receive a medal.  Strollers will be allowed in the 5k event and will start in the back of the group at the start line.  The course is certified by USATF as a Boston Marathon qualifying marathon race. Coinciding with the fifth annual Covington Cork and Pork Festival BBQ in Covington, VA everyone is encouraged to stay following the race and visit this Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned event.  While the barbeque will stand front and center as the centerpiece of this festival, there will be entertainment, a wine tasting event, and children activities.

Keith Bryant was born right here in the Alleghany Highlands. In his career, he has released four independent studio albums, including one on Lofton Creek Records. He charted for the first time in 2004 with the single "Riding' with the Legend", which Bryant co-wrote as a tribute to former NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, who died in 2001. The song peaked at number 47 on the Hot Country Songs chart, becoming his first charted single.

Frederick Frankenstein detests his family history but ultimately can't resist the temptation to follow in his infamous grandfather's footsteps.  Made with obvious affection for the original, Young Frankenstein is a riotously silly spoof featuring a fantastic performance by Gene Wilder. From the mind of Mel Brooks, it's a night of "Abby Normal" fun!

The talented dancers of Roanoke Ballet Theatre present two beloved classic tales of discovery and imagination. Peter and the Wolf, the greatest of all works for narrator and orchestration, tells the story of a young boy who disobeys his grandfather and climbs over the garden wall. When he encounters a wolf, with quick thinking and the help of his friends – a bird, a duck and a cat – Peter captures the wolf and it is taken to the zoo. Sleeping Beauty, set to Tchaikovsky’s celebrated score stays true to the story-book charm, this ballet casts a spell of delight all the way to true love’s kiss.

Barter Theatre presents: A Facility for Living
